Abnormal Penile Discharge in Malaysia: Causes, Testing & Treatment

Penile discharge that is yellow, green, cloudy, white or accompanied by burning urination is almost always caused by an STI - most often gonorrhoea, chlamydia, NSU or Mycoplasma genitalium. Same-day NAAT testing identifies the cause; antibiotics cure bacterial infections in days.

FAQ

Abnormal Penile Discharge - frequently asked questions

Clear answers, written by our clinical team. Tap any question for its direct permalink, or reach out to your Personal Concierge for anything else.

  1. Is any discharge from the penis normal?

Yes - clear pre-ejaculate during sexual arousal and ejaculate during orgasm are normal. Discharge at other times, or yellow/green/cloudy fluid, is abnormal and almost always points to an STI.

  2. How fast can I be tested?

Same-day NAAT testing on a urine sample is standard. Results return within 2-5 working days; in the meantime empirical antibiotics may be started if symptoms are typical.

  3. Can I treat discharge with antibiotics from a pharmacy?

No. The wrong antibiotic drives resistance (particularly for gonorrhoea and Mycoplasma genitalium) and leaves the actual infection untreated. Always confirm the cause with NAAT.

  4. Do my partners need testing too?

Yes. Sexual contacts from the past 60 days should be tested and treated to prevent ping-pong reinfection. Anonymous partner notification is supported.

  5. What if my test is negative but I still have discharge?

Around 20-30% of urethritis cases have no identified organism on standard NAAT - this is NSU. Empirical doxycycline and Mycoplasma genitalium testing are the next steps.
