Tips on how to Mane-tain Your Head of Hair

Introduction

Our hair is more than just a part of our appearance — it’s a statement of style, a sign of health, and for many, an essential aspect of self-confidence. While women have the advantage of makeup, men often rely on the health and thickness of their hair as key contributors to their overall appeal. As our resident physician at Hisential Bangsar Clinic, puts it, “Our hair is our crown — it’s one of the first things people see when they meet us.”.
In this blog post, we will share essential tips and practices that can help you keep your hair in excellent condition. From proper hair care routines to lifestyle adjustments, let’s explore the key factors that contribute to healthy and thick hair.

Maintain a Balanced and Nutritious Diet:

A balanced diet is the foundation of healthy hair. Eating nutrient-rich foods such as lean proteins (chicken, fish, eggs), fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil) provides your hair follicles with the necessary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants they need to thrive. Protein supports the structure of your hair strands, while vitamins and minerals contribute to collagen production and overall hair health. Healthy fats help to keep the scalp hydrated by forming a protective barrier that prevents moisture loss and aids in the absorption of vitamins. Additionally, incorporating iron-rich foods into your diet is recommended, as low levels of iron can contribute to hair loss.

Supplements:

Supplements can also play a crucial role in hair health. Biotin or Vitamin B7, for example, has been shown to enhance hair growth in people with conditions like alopecia areata and prevent hair loss in those experiencing telogen effluvium. Vitamin A aids in cell growth and repair, production of new hair cells and prevents hair loss. Vitamin C is crucial for collagen production, which gives hair its strength and structure. However, it’s essential to consult with a doctor before starting any supplementation regimen, as they may not provide the same benefits for individuals with adequate vitamin levels.

Medication

In the battle against male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia, two weapons of choice often rise to the top – Minoxidil and Finasteride.

Think of Minoxidil as your hair’s personal trainer. It stimulates your hair follicles to run an extra mile by enhancing the growth phase of your hair cycle, strengthening hair follicle size, and encouraging hair growth. Minoxidil is also a vasodilator, widening blood vessels to increase the flow of blood and nutrients to hair follicles. The result? More robust hair growth and a thicker hair shaft.

On the other hand, Finasteride works like a secret agent blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone infamous for causing male pattern baldness by shrinking hair follicles. Finasteride inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, responsible for converting testosterone into DHT. By preventing this conversion, it decreases the amount of DHT in your scalp, reducing its harmful effects on your hair follicles. This strategic move can slow down hair loss, and in some cases, even encourage hair regrowth.

Regularly Cleanse and Condition:

Regular cleansing and conditioning helps remove dirt, excess oil and product buildup, which can clog hair follicles which impedes healthy growth. Choose a shampoo that suits your hair type and addresses specific concerns, such as dandruff or excess oil. Follow up with a conditioner to nourish and moisturise your hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.

Protect Your Hair from Heat:

Excessive heat from styling tools like hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can damage your hair follicles leading to brittleness. Whenever possible, allow your hair to air dry or use the lowest heat setting. Bonus Tip: Use heat protectant products!

Avoid Harsh Chemicals and Overstyling:

Harsh chemicals, such as bleach or excessive hair dye, can weaken and damage your hair over time. Limit the use of hairstyling products that contain alcohol, as they can cause dryness and breakage. Minimise tight hairstyles that pull on your hair, as constant tension can lead to traction alopecia or thinning in certain areas.

Regular Scalp Massage:

Scalp massages help stimulate blood circulation to the hair follicles, promoting healthy hair growth. Use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp in circular motions for a few minutes each day. You can do this during shampooing or with natural oils, such as coconut or jojoba oil.

Managing Stress:

Did you know that excessive stress can contribute to hair loss and thinning? Regular exercise, meditation and engaging in relaxing activities are effective ways to manage stress levels. Remember, a relaxed mind and body contribute to hair that’s bold and ready to behold!
● Remember, a relaxed mind and body contribute to
– Locks that sway, in the most graceful way!
– A head of hair that’s pure and fair!
– locks that thrive and truly come alive!

Maintaining healthy and thick hair requires a combination of good hair care practices, a balanced diet, and overall wellness. By adopting these essential tips into your daily routine and seeking professional guidance when needed, you can nurture your hair and keep it in optimal condition.

14 April 2024, 1:53pm First time here for consultation on Sunday. Fee for weekdays RM60-85 and weekends RM100. I was notified prior for weekdays fee only, not weekends. It would be great if Eva, the assistant from WhatsApp could mention all the fees clearer to their customers. Anyway, my consultation with ‘Dr. Siao’ was amazing. Very informative and precise, attention to detail. 5 stars for him. Environment inside the clinic is very professional as well. The reception at the front also amazing.
