What Is Syphilis?
Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Treponema pallidum. It spreads through contact with syphilitic sores during vaginal, anal, or oral sex—and often goes unnoticed in its early stages. If left untreated, syphilis can progress through multiple stages and cause severe long-term damage to the brain, heart, and other organs. Fortunately, when caught early, it’s highly treatable and curable.
How Syphilis Is Transmitted
Syphilis spreads through skin-to-skin contact with an infected lesion or sore, typically during sexual activity. It can also pass through oral contact, kissing (if mouth sores are present), and from mother to baby during pregnancy. Since symptoms may be mild or hidden, especially in early stages, people can unknowingly transmit the infection. Using protection and getting tested regularly are critical steps to reduce your risk and prevent reinfection.
