What Results Can You Expect?
The primary benefit of ESWT is improved erectile function through better blood flow and healthier penile tissue. Many men report firmer, longer-lasting erections, greater spontaneity in intimacy, and renewed self-confidence. Because the therapy works by repairing and strengthening natural physiological pathways, the results often extend beyond just sexual performance. Men frequently describe feeling less dependent on medication and more in control of their health.
Unlike oral drugs that wear off after a few hours, ESWT creates long-term changes. Results can last months or even years, and in many cases, improvements continue to develop after treatment has ended as the body completes its repair processes.
Evidence and Results
Clinical research has consistently shown the effectiveness of focused ESWT in treating ED. Studies demonstrate significant improvements in erectile function, sexual satisfaction, and overall confidence. Importantly, the results are long-term, as the therapy enhances the body’s ability to sustain erections naturally.
1. Shockwave treatment of erectile dysfunction
This study focused on men who did not respond to common ED medications (PDE5 inhibitors). After 12 sessions of ESWT, 76% of participants experienced at least a 5-point rise in IIEF scores, and 28% regained normal erectile function. This highlighted ESWT’s ability to convert nonresponders into responders, offering new hope where pills had failed.

2. Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 16 Randomized Controlled Trials of Clinical Outcomes of Low-Intensity Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy in Treating Erectile Dysfunction
To assess ESWT more broadly, Dong and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis of 7 randomized controlled trials with 522 men. The results showed that ESWT produced significant improvements in IIEF scores and Erection Hardness Scores compared to placebo. Importantly, the therapy was safe, well-tolerated, and showed durable benefits up to 12 months.

3. Focused vs Radial Shockwave Therapy
Both focused (fESWT) and radial (rESWT) shockwave therapies are used in men’s health, but they work differently. Radial waves are shallow and spread out, while focused waves penetrate deeper and deliver targeted energy. Research shows that for erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, and chronic prostatitis/pelvic pain, focused ESWT consistently produces stronger and more reliable results. Radial ESWT may help in mild cases, but focused therapy has significantly better evidence, especially for conditions involving deeper tissue like the penis and prostate.
